The southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, is experiencing devastating flooding from heavy rains. Because of this, a major catastrophic event is taking place. Over one hundred people have died so far, hundreds are missing, and several hundred thousand people are without homes. Several towns are completely destroyed, and parts of the capital are submerged. Porto Alegre is a city of three million people. Eighty-five percent do not have available drinking water, and half the city is without power. The infrastructure is definitely feeling the strain. The airport is completely underwater and is not forecast to reopen until September. Most access points into the city are submerged. This is a long, ongoing event that is devastating to many.
We know of a couple of churches that have lost everything. In every church that is in fellowship with our missionaries, there are people who are affected by this flooding. We at Baptist World Mission earnestly desire to be of help to our brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as take advantage of opportunities to share the Gospel and the love of Christ through relief efforts.
